Faiths Role in Healing
A.) What Faith Is:
Strong’s Calls FAITH: A persuasion, i.e. credible; moral conviction especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; or, consistency in the profession of Salvation; the system of Christian truth itself: It is: Assurance, Belief or Faith.
Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. NKJV
Matthew 9:28-30 28 And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?"They said to Him, "Yes, Lord." Then He touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith let it be to you." NKJV
Faith and belief are used interchangeably. If a person had faith it was their belief and vice versa. Look at one of the most famous passages of scripture in the Bible. Romans 10:8-12 NKJV 8 But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): 9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame."
Our Faith is our Belief System; the things we believe concerning God, His Word and the plan of salvation.
B.) Gods Will In Healing.
Psalms 105:37 KJV He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.
Exodus 15:26 KJV If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians (the curses in Egypt, the world): for I am the LORD that healeth thee.
Matthew 8:1-3 NKJV And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, "Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean." 3 Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, "I am willing; be cleansed." Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
Hebrews 13:8-9 NKJV 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9 Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines.
It is impossible for Jesus to be willing to heal one and not another, He Is Willing!!
Acts 10:38 NKJV 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.
God is against sickness and disease, he removes it. It is GOOD to Heal, God is GOOD! He heals all.
Matthew 8:16-17 NKJV When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: "He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses." Hebrews 13:8 8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. NKJV
C.) The Faith Choice
Isaiah 38:1-6 NKJV 1 In those days Hezekiah was sick and near death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, went to him and said to him, "Thus says the LORD: 'Set your house in order, for you shall die and not live.'" 2 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed to the LORD, 3 and said, "Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what is good in Your sight." And Hezekiah wept bitterly. 4 And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying, 5 "Go and tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the LORD, the God of David your father: "I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will add to your days fifteen years.
Hezekiah received the worst possible report, from the prophet no less-death of God speaking what God told him! Hezekiah didn’t panic, he didn’t get into fear and unbelief, he PRAYED! Then God spoke to Isaiah telling him that Hezekiah would live! Hezekiah chose to believe in God’s willingness and ability to heal him and give him life, he had a choice. Even when God tells us we are going to die, there’s always hope!
John 12:42-43 NKJV Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
The Pharisees believed but chose NOT to confess Him because they loved the dignity and respect of people more than of God. They loved their position at work, with their friends. They didn’t want people ridiculing them for their belief.
Mark 5:22-24, 35-37, 42-43 KJV 22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet 23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, "My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her, that she may be healed, and she will live." 24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. 35 While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue's house who said, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?" 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe." Verse 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
Here’s a religious leader, Jairus. His daughter is dying when he puts his faith in Jesus, even though obstacles come and interruptions (the woman with the issue of blood) and he receives the report she is dead, when Jesus says “don’t be afraid, only believe”, he continues the faith walk to total healing when his daughter is brought back to life!
Faith is a choice and every day we are faced with the decision to belief and choose life or to choose sickness and death!
D.) Our Faith At Work
1. Believing for others under our care. Matthew 8:5-13 NKJV Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, 6 saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented." 7 And Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him." 8 The centurion answered and said, "Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and to another, 'Come,' and he comes; and to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, "Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that same hour.
Matthew 15:22-28 KJV 22 And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil. 23 But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us. 24 But he answered and said, I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 25 Then came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. 26 But he answered and said, It is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it to dogs. 27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters' table. 28 Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.
This is a time when there were two types of people in the world, Jews and everyone else, only Jews had a covenant with god, so here’s a woman who is without a covenant with God. She has come to him knowing this. Not only that but she is almost pushy in her faith. She wants her daughter healed! She never gave up and is commended for having GREAT FAITH. Mark 5:22-24, 35-37 NKJV 22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. Why trouble the Teacher any further?" 36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, "Do not be afraid; only believe." 42 Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
2. Believing for ourselves. Luke 17:12-19 KJV 12 And as he entered into a certain village, there met him ten men that were lepers, which stood afar off: 13 And they lifted up their voices, and said, Jesus, Master, have mercy on us. 14 And when he saw them, he said unto them, Go show yourselves unto the priests. And it came to pass, that, as they went, they were cleansed. 15 And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,16 And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. 17 And Jesus answering said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But where are the nine?”18 There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger. 19 And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.
Here, 10 lepers are cleansed, that means the disease of leprosy was gone, but ONE leper came back and thanked Him and worshipped him, he was made whole. His faith in God’s ability and desire to heal made him whole, that means if he had lost an ear, arm or leg even hair- The leper was made new as though he had never had the disease!!!
Mark 10:46-52 KJV 46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. 49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. 50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?” The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. 52 And Jesus said unto him, “Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole.” And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.
To Bartimaeus, it may have seemed like years that he was calling on Jesus, everyone around him told not to bother Jesus, he was blind! But Bartimaeus was determined to receive his sight, not matter what other people told him! When Jesus called him it says he removed his garment; this garment was the “official beggars’ coat; he was saying I am not associating with anymore the way I and every one else have perceived me! I am taking of my badge of sickness.
Matthew 9:22-29 KJV 26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land. (The woman with the issue of blood had just been healed) 27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us. 28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you.
Mark 5:25-34 25 And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, 26 And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When she had heard of Jesus, came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28 For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. 29 And straightway the fountain of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? 31 And his disciples said unto him, Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. This woman had spent years going to doctors, she had spent all her finances and only got worse. She knew it had to be God’s will for her to be healed, she sought it every where for 12 years, she was determined! She was choosing life, not death. Then she heard about Jesus. It says she said, made confession about her impending healing. She had so much faith for healing and had obviously heard about his ability to heal that she just touched His robe and was healed. Jesus was so impressed that not only was she healed, but he made her whole. That is to say all that she had lost from that moment on was being restored to her!
